Bioterrorism in Agriculture in the United States is a great threat. If an enemy launches a chemical attack against the United States, our food supply could be greatly compromised. Food plants and bakeries might not be aware of receiving contaminated ingredients and could potentially pass these goods onto consumers. Batches could be shipped throughout the country before suppliers knew they might be distributing infected materials. Imagine the possibility of a Bioterrorism Food Incident. It might be days before an infected batch could be recalled.
In order to avoid an Agricultural Bioterrorism disaster, the Food and Drug Administration initiated the Agricultural Bioterrorism Protection Act in 2002. Currently the government is beginning to crack down on food plants that do not keep complete batch records for all ingredients they receive, materials they produce, and products that they transport.
For most food plants, recording and keeping detailed lot number histories is a daunting task involving mountains of paperwork, which is why a lot tracking module was added to our existing inventory control system-PRIMS. PRIMS is a complete solution for handling recipes, scaling, allergen cleaning and lot number tracking. Any plant that deals with agricultural or food materials can benefit from lot number tracking.
